Smoke Extraction
The Role of Smoke Extraction Systems
Smoke extraction systems are designed to remove combustion by-products from buildings, such as smoke and toxic gases, which can reduce visibility and impair human functions. By eliminating these elements, safer conditions are created for occupant evacuation and firefighting operations are facilitated, helping locate the fire source and limit the spread of flames.
When natural ventilation is not sufficient, smoke is extracted through dedicated ducts that direct hot gases outside the building. When natural buoyancy cannot ensure the required extraction flow, mechanical ventilation systems with fans and controlled make-up air supply are used to ensure the efficient operation of the system.
Classification
SR EN
13501-4
The fire classification of products and construction elements is determined based on fire resistance tests performed on the components of smoke control systems.
Testing Method
SR EN
1366-9
Fire resistance testing of technical installations includes the evaluation of ducts used for smoke extraction from a single fire compartment.
Requirements
SR EN
12101-7
Smoke and hot gas control systems include dedicated duct sections designed for the safe evacuation of smoke.
Benefits
Smoke extraction is part of the smoke and hot gas evacuation system and has the following objectives:
Efficient smoke extraction for up to 2 hours during a fire
Reduction of temperatures generated during the fire
Creation of a smoke-free layer for the safe evacuation of occupants
Facilitating the rapid and efficient intervention of firefighters
CE Certification
System Certification
The system is certified together with all its components: supports, connection flanges, sealing mastic, and compensator. To ensure performance and operational safety, all these elements must be used exactly in the configuration in which they were tested. Replacing system components with other products is not permitted.
The system is CE marked and is accompanied by a Declaration of Performance. This certifies its use as a rectangular duct system for smoke control, designed for a single fire compartment and equipped with a compensator.
